SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket – collectively referred to as Starship – represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship will be the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, capable of carrying up to 150 metric tonnes fully reusable and 250 metric tonnes expendable.Starship is the fully reusable spacecraft and second stage of the Starship system. The vehicle offers an integrated payload section and is capable of carrying crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. Starship is also capable of point-to-point transport on Earth, enabling travel to anywhere in the world in one hour or less.Super Heavy is the first stage, or booster, of the Starship launch system. Powered by 33 Raptor engines using sub-cooled liquid methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (LOX), Super Heavy is fully reusable and will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere to land back at the launch site.RAPTOR ENGINES RAPTOR| RAPTOR VACUUM (RVAC) The Raptor engine is a reusable methane-oxygen staged-combustion engine that powers the Starship system and has twice the thrust of the Falcon 9 Merlin engine. Starship will be powered by six engines, three Raptor engines, and three Raptor Vacuum (RVac) engines, which are designed for use in the vacuum of space. Super Heavy will be powered by 33 Raptor engines, with 13 in the center and the remaining 20 around the perimeter of the booster’s aft end.

Huawei makes breakthrough in EDA design tools for 14nm chips

Huawei has developed electronic design automation (EDA) tools for chips produced at and above 14-nanometer technology with domestic partners, marking a major breakthrough for China's semiconductor industry. Nicknamed the "cradle" of integrated circuits, EDA is a widely used software in the sector and significant to the entire chip-designing process. The Chinese tech giant has achieved localization of EDA tools above 14nm in the chip field and will complete comprehensive verification this year, Huawei confirmed on March 24, citing the remarks made by its rotating chairman Xu Zhijun on February 28. Xu also said the company has developed 78 tools related to chip hardware and software. China has long relied on U.S. companies such as Cadence and Synopsys for high-end electronic design automation tools. Chips produced at the 14nm level were first introduced in smartphones in the mid-2010s and are two to three generations behind leading-edge technology, but it still marks a breakthrough. The progress is part of a broader push by Huawei to develop domestic development tools for hardware, software and chips amid the U.S. governmental restrictions. Xu further mentioned that although the company has achieved many breakthroughs in product development tools over the past three years, it still faces formidable challenges, thus Huawei will redouble its efforts to attract more global talents to achieve a strategic breakthrough in the area.

First Space Hotel in 2027

Travel has taken a back seat to health over the past year or so, with the coronavirus pandemic making it difficult to enjoy trips to pretty much anywhere. Staying safe and healthy is obviously a worthy trade-off, but there’s a lot of people on this planet right now that would love nothing more than to do a bit of exploring. If that sounds like you — and you happen to have incredibly deep pockets — you might be interested to hear that a first-of-its-kind hotel is being built, and traveling to it would be a truly special experience. You see, the hotel is going to be in space. No, seriously. A California-based company called Orbital Assembly is currently working on what would be the first-ever hotel orbiting Earth, and they want to have it up and running as early as 2027. The hotel will be part of a massive spacecraft called the Voyager Station, which the company plans on construction beginning in 2025.If any of this sounds vaguely familiar, and you’re a longtime reader of this website, it’s probably because I wrote about this very same project back in 2019. At the time, the group behind the station was (and maybe still is?) called The Gateway Foundation, and the space station the team intended to build was called Von Braun Station. They wanted to have it up and running by 2025, but as I noted in that article, the date was never going to be met anyway. Now, what appears to be the space construction arm of the company, Orbital Assembly, stealing the headlines with the space hotel that will be one component of Voyager Station, which appears to be a revised version of Von Braun. Both The Gateway Foundation and Orbital Assembly have their own websites but share a logo as well as the same management team, so it’s clear that it’s basically just two sides of the same coin.
